Hearing Impairment - Questions for Comments

Hi:
Think about a specific activity that you are planning to use in about 2 weeks. If a new student, who is Deaf, enrolls in your school and is assigned to your class during that week, what steps will you need to take in order to make the lesson activities accessible to the new student?

I think providing more visual aids and other forms of visual arts materials can help a student who is deaf learn an become a part of the class. I would also want to promote, if possible, cooperative learning, where a student who is deaf may still be given a chance to interact with the rest of the students and enhance social skills.

for example if the lesson was on learning new vocabularies I would have a set of pictures as well as the word for the picture at the bottom to help the student know what words we are going to learn for that day or for the week.
if possible I will have the words broken down and in addition i will have a set of instructions on the activity which will be creating a short story using the vocabulary words. This particular student will have numerous pictures to use and be able to put a story together.
I will also be monitoring the student and make sure he/she is on task.

As a science teacher, I will prepare a lot of visual and hands-on activity such as pictures of animals if the topics is living non-living things, oceans, and rocks amongst other things which pertains to the lesson prepared during this weeks.

A student with hearing impaired or deaf will be in my class next week. Wow! I gotta have to plan quick and thoroughly to meet the need of the student. I know the student can see at least. I have a computer in my class that I could have the student do some reading practice skills. I will sit with the student to check on the reading level. If I know that he or she can read independently than I can include computer software designed for the learning needs of the student. But, if the student will be struggling than I have to use basic hands on vocabulary to improve his reading and especially speech. I will make sure that he or she will be seeing speech therapy and maybe I can get more help from the speech therapy also.
