IntelliKeys [Demo #2]

This device is really interesting and it will be most helpful to those students with vision impairments because it has big letters, numbers as well as other functions.  Its nice how there are already built in codes that the intellikeys can read and here are multiple overlays for both basic writing to web browsing! Overall, a lot of students can you this device and one thing good about this device is that the teacher can type in something using the keyboard on the computer and the student can follow along using the intellikeys keyboard!

Five Minute Demo. #3

I would like to share with you this final five minutes demo. I enjoyed the collections of images and creation of each slides. It was overwhelming at times because I have a habit of creating and creating with no stop. I did explored and discovered an enormous number of online resources and many many more. The matter of fact is I could apply these advanced technologies in the classroom to regular or special education classroom. I guarantee that students will be able to enhance more in their learning than books and pencils.

Here is a URL to my slideshare..enjoy it. I welcome all comments.

Students with multiple disabilities in hearing, vision, ED, LD, MR or mobility will find recording lectures or instructions easy and simple. Use of this slim and light digital recorder does not stand out as an assistive device making it an ideal tool for inclusion students who are self-conscious.

Manual Wheelchair ~ 2nd Demo.

According to Wikipedia, a wheelchair is a wheeled mobility device in which the user sits. The device is operated either manually (by turning the wheels by the hand) or via various automated systems. Wheelchairs are used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness (physiological or physical), injury, or . People with both sitting and walking disability often need to use a wheelbench.
Question: Would you use googledoc in your classroom? If so, how would you use it to teach your class?

Question, Thoughts and suggestion for Content Presentation

Wow! I was amazed that some of you went above and beyond. All those software presented was awesome and its interesting enough to think if we are able to use it. We can only dream so much to have all kinds of technology or software to be incorporated onto our daily lesson planning. BUT! Guam Public School System did not have a budget for new technology, therefore, we inherited technology computer in particular from DODEA which is 10 to 15 years old. To top it off, GPSS program/set up these computers before it was distributed to all public school system so that you're limited to what you can do? In short, it is blocked.

Here's the questions:

1) How or in what way you can utilized the software that was presented onto your classroom teaching and learning if you have limited access?

2) Are you willing to spend your hard earned money to acquire one? I/we have spend our money then and now to get what we need to teach prepared lesson more often than not.

Content Presentation #2

Hi Everyone,
Here's the Content Presentation #2 that was presented last night' class. I hope you learned and enjoyed the topic presented. Copy and paste the URL for viewing.

http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/lgrigley-176843-orthopedic-impairment-presentation1-entertainment-ppt-powerpoint/

Here’s my question:
If you are new incoming teacher and you have a student with an Orthopedic Impairment with McCune-Albright Syndrome. (How would you welcome this student into your classroom with the other students?)

There was a question Dr. Cyrus asked about the McCune- Albright Syndrome. I had searched it and accounted. Please check it out and provide me with your opinion and/or suggestion.

Definition of McCune-Albright syndrome

McCune-Albright syndrome: A genetic disorder of bones, skin pigmentation and hormonal problems with premature sexual development. Also called Albright syndrome or polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. In the syndrome, there is bone disease with fractures and deformity of the legs, arms and skull; pigment patches of the skin; and endocrine (hormonal) disease with early puberty (early menstrual bleeding, development of breasts and pubic hair) and an increased rate of growth. The McCune-Albright syndrome is usually caused by mosaicism for a mutation in a gene called GNAS1 (Guanine Nucleotide binding protein, Alpha Stimulating activity polypeptide 1).

The syndrome shows a broad spectrum of severity. Sometimes, children are diagnosed in early infancy with obvious bone disease and markedly increased endocrine secretions from several glands. At the opposite end of the spectrum, many children are entirely healthy, and have little or no outward evidence of bone or endocrine involvement. They may enter puberty close to the normal age, and have no unusual skin pigment at all.

Check out the URL I have pasted here to see the actual image of how this disease affect an individual.

Hearing Impairment - Questions for Comments

Hi:
Think about a specific activity that you are planning to use in about 2 weeks. If a new student, who is Deaf, enrolls in your school and is assigned to your class during that week, what steps will you need to take in order to make the lesson activities accessible to the new student?

"What's My Word?" youtube video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5ISjuNjeJc&NR=1

This is one good way to teach a child words as well as having the child identifying the word. This process helps them both say the word and know what it is.

Question: What do you think about this technique? Do you think this technique will work on all ages of individuals with speech impairment? why or why not?

Shaking up the nascent market for electronic books for the second time in two months, Amazon.com will begin selling e-books for reading on Apple’s popular iPhone and iPod Touch. Amazon says its Kindle 2, above, and devices like Apple’s iPhone and iPod are complementary.

Starting Wednesday, owners of these Apple devices can download a free application, Kindle for iPhone and iPod Touch, from Apple’s App Store. The software will give them full access to the 240,000 e-books for sale on Amazon.com, which include a majority of best sellers.

Hearing Assistive Technology ~ TTY/TDD Device

Hearing Assistive Technology makes sound accessible to people with a hearing loss. This particular device that I chose may look like a regular phone or somewhat like a typewriter. TTY/TDD devices use normal phone lines to communicate. TTY/TDD stands for a group of telecommunication devices that make it easier for deaf and/or hearing impair people to talk over telephone lines. TTY stands for telephone typewriter, teletypewriter or text messages back and forth. TDD stands for Telecommunications Device for the Deaf. Usually these devices are all classify under TTY/TDD. Sometimes TTY means manual devices such as typewriters, TDD devices usually means computer assisted or digital devices. For the most part, a TTY/TDD device is the size of a typewriter or a small computer

Low-Tech Assistive Technology Device: Memory Telephone

For most people, a simple task such as dialing digits to call others or answering the phone is easy, for others, however, it is a formidable enterprise. Communication is vital, and to be able to make a phone call in cases of emergencies is very important, most especially to those individuals who find it difficult to use regular telephones, hence, the memory telephones. Memory telephones are designed to aid individuals with disabilities to making interactions via tele-communication a more convenient experience. Its features include auto-dialing, enlarged buttons with images, alert light for incoming call and other features that are also found in regular telephones, such as redial and volume control. The memory telephones are most suitable to individuals with visual and hearing impairments, short-term memory, and motor disabilities.

Hi Everyone,

I will like to introduce myself as A TEACHER !
I am a teacher represents the finality of what is claimed when confronted with the question who are you? The information I intend to discuss and share with you is important because it involves issues that relates to my work as a teacher, and a life long learner seeking to be a “high performing teacher”. The teaching profession has changed with the new technologies, but it faces the same challenges in terms of social, political, economic, and philosophical challenges. My graduate studies with Walden University have shaped my views on teaching, and learning. From the beginning of the program, I have interacted with students, and instructors that I know value making positive contributions to the field of education technology.
I have learned through the opportunity of sharing experiences with graduate students and my instructors that we have a common bond of becoming a “high performing teacher”, being a life long learner, and professional through the search for knowledge. Most importantly, that as educators we have a great responsibility to develop self direction, leadership, and moral ethical values, of the students we teach. Technology will complement the field of education, and because of the rapid development, we will be required to adapt technology changes along the way into the future.
During the graduate program I have sensed a greater change in terms of being aware of beliefs at the core of becoming a professional teacher. My goal is to provide you with enough information to understand my position in regards to the beliefs I hold and principles that have sustained my motivation to be a teacher and proudly claim to be a teacher.
